The Professional Mushers Association of BC is very pleased with having an instrumental role in the formation of the highest standards for sled dog care in the country. It is with great anticipation that our association will take a role in educating the government, as well as the public on the working sled dog and professional tour operations in the Province of BC. The care of the animals is a priority and at the forefront for any decision a professional musher will make. The Sled Dog Standard of Care Regulation is now enforceable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
This Regulation establishes legal requirements for such things as containment, health and working conditions.
The BC Sled Dog Code of Practice outlines a set of recommended best practices for B.C.’s sled dog industry and also provides information to both commercial and recreational sled dog operators in such areas as health and welfare, nutrition, housing, husbandry, transportation and euthanasia
The PMABC worked with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, College of BC Vets, the BC SPCA, and many other well respected mushers and animal welfare advocates to develop this Code. We'd like to thank everyone for their hard work.
The code will be revisited in 12 months time. We also anticipate it will be reviewed from time to time as it’s put into practice. The PMABC looks forward to being part of this process.
